Past Projects

FinnEKVIT has in 2002-2004 helped to plan, established consortia and secured funds for and/ or implemented the following major projects with its European partners:

  1. The project Creative Europe was planned and implemented in 1999-2002. The project was financed by the members of the Network of European Foundations for Innovative Co-operation (NEF) and co-ordinated by ERICArts (the European Research Institute for Comparative Cultural Policy and the Arts, Bonn). FinnEKVIT carried out case studies, provided analyses on creativity management and contributed texts for Part II of the final report "Creative Europe: On Governance and Management of Artistic Creativity in Europe" (ARCult Media, Bonn/Novi Sad 2000).
  2. FinnEKVIT has implemented a development plan (DP 2000-2002) "Managing change and institutional engineering in the cultural and arts institutions" in Latvia, Lithuania and Finland. The designing of the plan and its two stages of implementation in 2000-2003 were financed from Finnish government funds for co-operation with adjacent regions. The project ended in February 2003, the communication of results and follow-up took place in March-June 2003.
  3. FinnEKVIT has taken care of the Finnish data gathering, analysis and reporting for the project Culture-Gates. This is a comparative study on the impact that gate-keeping systems and gate-keepers have on women's careers and labour market position in the fields of music and new media arts. The project is financed by the EU/DG Employment and Social Affairs (programme of Equal Opportunities) and co-ordinated by ERICArts (Bonn). It covers four countries; Austria, Germany, Finland and Portugal. The analysis and reporting were completed in January-February 2003, the final report "Culture Gates. Exposing Professional 'Gate-keeping' Processes in Music and New Media Arts was published in June 2003.
  4. On national level FinnEKVIT carried out in 2000-2002 an extensive mapping and analysis of cultural policy administration and legislation in Finland. The report "The Fields of Arts and Culture. Basic structures, governance, legislation and new challenges", with a companion codification and collection of laws, statutes and EU/EC directives, was published in August 2002 by Tietosanomat, Helsinki. This work was financially supported by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.

FinnEKVIT started in 2003 two new projects that will be carried out in 2003-2004. The project "Governance and Financing of the Arts and Culture in Finland" will set the governance of public and private financing for the arts and culture into an evaluative frame and propose scenarios for future development in 2004-2014. The project is financed by the Finnish Foundation for the Promotion of Cultural Policy Research.

The project "Culture Gates" was continued in spring 2004 by the same research team as "Culture Biz", a comparative study of gender relations in small and medium-sized publishing houses and film production companies. The Finnish project has finished the first stage of the project (collecting the background information) in August 2004; the second stage, the case studies/expert interviews will be carried out in September.

In 2002-2003, FinnEKVIT participated in two important European planning processes: in developing European comparative cultural statistics and in the co-ordination of European cultural co-operation. FinnEkvit will be one of the founding members of the new ERICARTS company.
